How does the pigment inkjet printing system work?

Surrounding the jet at the point where the drops separate from the ink stream is the charge electrode. A voltage is applied between the charge electrode and the jet stream and when a drop breaks off from the stream, it carries a charge proportional to the applied voltage. By varying the charge electrode voltages at the same rate as drops are produced, it is therefore possible to charge drops to pre-determined level. Any residual charge is grounder through the nozzle body.

The stream of the droplets continues its flight and passes between two deflector electrodes, which are maintained at constant potentials, typically: ± 8kV. In the presence of the resulting electrostatic field, a drop is deflected towards one of the plates by an amount proportional to the charge carried. Drops that are uncharged are not deflected and are collected by a gutter to be subsequently returned to the ink tank. Those drops, which are charged, and hence deflected, strike a substrate which moves at right angles to the direction of drop deflection. By charging consecutive drops to different levels, predetermined column patterns can be printed. As the substrate moves, these columns (or raster) can be arranged to form alphanumerical characters, Graphical, symbols, company logos etc.
